No experience is necessary for this fun, fast-paced linocut/letterpress workshop. We’re using the calavera imagery of José Posada as a point of inspiration, but don’t let that limit you. You may begin with your own drawing or, for those of us who are lacking in that skill (your instructor included!), you’ll learn how to transfer a found image to a linoleum block for carving. Once they’re carved, we’ll print our blocks on the press inside a framework of historic wood type. Before the night is done, we’ll do a print exchange, too, so everyone leaves with a pretty amazing portfolio of calavera prints, just in time for Dia de Los Muertos. Not bad for three hours’ work! You’ll learn how to print your blocks without a press, too, so you can print more calaveras at home.

DOROTHY HAMILTON SCHOLARSHIP
One seat in this workshop is available to an FAU student for just the cost of materials ($10) thanks to funds raised in memory of Dorothy Hamilton, who loved JCBA’s monthly Real Mail Fridays letter writing socials. To be considered for this seat, you must be a current FAU student and send an email to jcutrone@fau.edu explaining what it would mean to you to have the opportunity to take this workshop. Instructor John Cutrone is Director of the Jaffe Center for Book Arts. He is a graduate of the MFA in the Book Arts Program a the University of Alabama. Aside from his work at JCBA, he is also a writer and a partner in Lake Worth's Convivio Bookworks, a book arts studio specializing in limited edition letterpress printed books and broadsides (www.conviviobookworks.com). He is the author of the Convivio Book of Days, a lifestyle blog exploring the quirkier side of seasonal traditions and encouraging us to live the ceremony of each day (www.conviviobookworks.com/blog).
