About this Event
In 2018 Christies sold the “Portrait of Edmond Belamy” for $432,000. It was the first time that a painting generated via an AI algorithm reached the world auction stage. The portrait is not the first product of an algorithm that is classified as art. It was preceded by Tresset’s art painting robot and Weinberg’s marimba playing robot improvising jazz, to name a few. This Symposium will examine whether these works can be considered art and explore the role of the human operator.
