South Florida Science Center and Aquarium and the FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Science present a joint lecture as part of the 2019 Frontiers in Science Lecture Series.

Join us on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the South Florida Science Center in West Palm Beach for a joint Frontiers in Science talk: "Exploring the Connection between Galaxies and Supermassive Black Holes" presented by Dr. Vicki Sarajedini from Florida Atlantic University.

The talk is free and open to the public - registration is required: frontiersatsfscience.eventbrite.com.

Super massive black holes appear to live in the centers of almost all galaxies. These black holes are a million to a billion times more massive than the Sun and many questions remain as to how they form. Some galaxies, known as active galactic nuclei (AGN), have material falling into their central black holes from the surrounding region. It is still unknown what drives material to the centers of galaxies when the accretion starts and how the presence of an AGN affects star formation throughout the rest of the galaxy. Understanding the relationship between galaxies and their central black holes requires the identification of many AGN using various techniques and multi-wavelengths observations. I will discuss how AGN can be found in galaxies near and far using a variety of astronomical data with a focus on the variable nature of AGN . Optical variability surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope have uncovered a number of these accreting black holes extending to the faintest and most distant galaxy populations. Variability surveys at longer wavelengths using the Spitzer Space Telescope are particularly sensitive to dusty sources and may hold the key to uncovering hidden phases of black hole accretion and galaxy evolution. The impact of future ground and space-based missions such as the James Webb Telescope will also be discussed.

Learn about topics such as the astrobiology of meteorites, to keeping your genome safe. Explore the sciences with eight researchers and innovators from across the globe and right here in our own community. We invited experts in the fields of Anthropology, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics, and Physics. Science Dean, Dr. Ata Sarajedini states, “My hope is that these lectures stir you to deeper learning, explain your world, ignite your discussions, and bring the richness of the sciences to you.”
