INSTRUCTOR STEPHANIE WOLFF

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP TUESDAY NOVEMBER 24, 2020 11 AM TO 1 PM EASTERN STANDARD TIME FROM WHEREVER YOU ARE

CLASS LIMIT: 15

Volvelles, sometimes known as wheel charts, are the focus of this workshop. These structures have been used in historic books, in promotional materials, and in devices to aid computation. Two or more circles turn to show information through cut out windows. This workshop covers a basic version of a volvelle and discussion of variations and ideas about incorporating content. Volvelles are fun to make as cards, personalized gifts or to include in artists' books.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Tablet or computer with internet connection • Scissors • Metal ruler, 12” • Compass • X-Acto or other craft knife • Self-healing cutting mat OR thick (not corrugated) cardboard, like the back of a legal pad to cut on • Something to pierce a small hole in paper, like an awl or a large sewing needle • A nickel and a quarter, or other similar size coins • Pencil, colored pencils, colored markers, fine black marker • Pre-workshop access to printer to print out handouts (recommended) • Bone folder (optional) • 45 and 30-60-90 right triangles (optional) • Protractor (optional) • Glue stick or tape (optional) • Straight pins with a flat end OR standard metal paper clips, 5 or so • Brads, 5 or so (also known as paper fasteners) OR if can’t find these, some thin wire pieces like stripped twist ties • Thread (linen or other sewing thread) 12-15” and sewing needle to use with it • 15-20 sheets of 8.5 x 11 card stock, 65 lb okay but 80 or 110 lb preferred, white • 15-20 sheets of 8.5 x 11 card stock, 65 lb okay but 80 or 110 lb preferred, one or more colors. A NOTE ON SUPPLIES: Any card stock weight paper is fine to use for this workshop, or thin cereal boxes, or a heavy watercolor or printmaking paper can work also. The paper just needs to be entirely flat, not cut from a roll. If you can’t find brads, there are other options to connect the circles that we will cover.
