Power Stitching: The Embroidered Cover

Instructor Miriam Schaer

Saturday & Sunday January 25 & 26, 2020
10 AM to 4 PM each day
Jaffe Book Arts Gallery, FAU Library

In this workshop you will be taught the fundamentals of dynamic hand-embroidered covers, infusing a traditional form with new meaning. Students will learn a number of embroidery stitches they can use to beautify and dramatize their book covers, and will bind at least one book in an exposed spine style. You’ll learn how to back fabrics, including velvet, so those fabrics can be turned into book cloth. Other ways of incorporating fabrics into book structures will be discussed. We will examine images of historic embroidered bindings, from the thirteenth-century "Felbrigge Psalter" to examples by contemporary artists using embroidery in both artists' books and related art forms. Previous experience is helpful but not necessary.

$250 General Public / $230 FAU Faculty & Staff, Students from other Institutions / $210 FAU Students

To be considered for this seat, you must be a current FAU student and send an email to jcutrone@fau.edu explaining what it would mean to you to have the opportunity to take this workshop. Applications for this opportunity will be accepted through January 10, 2020.
