In partnership with FPL Manatee Lagoon, FAU marine biologist, Marianne Porter, Ph.D., presents: "Tuning Fish: Changing Skeletons and Swimming" on Friday, April 24 at 3:30 PM.

The talk can be accessed through Zoom at this link the day and time of the talk: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/117601430. Find more Zoom details for this talk below.

Talk description:
How do animals tune, or dynamically adjust, their movements using their skin and skeletons? This research investigates the contributions of the shark cartilaginous vertebral column, skin, and animal movements that tune the body during swimming. Shark vertebrae work as springs, which store and return energy based on the species specific arrangement of mineral in the cartilage. Shark skin contains mineralized teeth, that make it feel like sandpaper, which are hypothesized to resist stretching. By studying these levels of organization individually, the influence of hard and soft tissues on overall swimming can be understood in many species.
